Darlene J. Powell (1932-1998) was born in South Dakota in 1932 and moved with her family to California in 1942 to work in support of World War II. In her early teens, the author belonged to a swim ballet troupe that performed for local charity organizations. Married right out of high school, the author raised three children. In July 1987, Mrs. Powell retired from Pacific Bell, after twenty-five years of service. With her second husband, James, she enjoyed her retirement years by spending time with her ten grandchildren and focused on writing her book, New Star which is currently being republished by Simplex Publishing. Through her achievement of writing New Star, Mrs. Powell also inspired her granddaughter to write several of her own books and work with other aspiring authors to help bring their books to life.
